There were two major takeaways in the first Himalayan Legislators’ Meet held in Kohima on September 27, 2013.
First, participants at the Meet resolved to constitute a pan-Himalayan forum of legislators to articulate
the environment related policies and legislation needed to address the growing environmental
concerns in Hill states.
Second, the legislators of Nagaland, under Chairmanship of the Nagaland Assembly Speaker
Mr ChotisuhSazo, decided to form the Nagaland chapter of GLOBE India. Nagaland MLA Mmhonlumo
Kikon was assigned the task of completing the formalities within three months. Once constituted,
Nagaland will be the second chapter of GLOBE India after Sikkim.
The first Himalayan Legislators’ Meet, held at the Committee Hall of the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly, was part of the three-day Sustainable Mountain Development Summit III. The Meet was
co-chaired by Mr K T Gyaltsen, Speaker, Sikkim Assembly, and Assam MP and secretary general,
GLOBE, Mr Bhubaneswar Kalita.
Mr P D Rai, Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim and executive president GLOBE India, acted as the moderator of the Meet.
The Legislators’ Meet also resolved to welcome the Kohima Declaration presented by Indian Himalayan States Youth Summit 2013 and expressed their solidarity with the thoughts, concerns, expectations and suggestions detailed in the Declaration.
The Meet, organised by GLOBE India, was attended by 51 delegates, including MPs, MLAs and ministers,from nine out of eleven Himalayan states.
